Academic Planning and Fall 2026 Academic Programs

UMD’s academic planning has been shaped over the past year by conversations in shared governance, collegiate and department units, and campus-wide forums along with criteria and data recommendations from an Academic Revisioning Committee. 

Changes to our academic program offerings are guided by these principles:

  • Alignment with our mission, vision, values, and core identity
  • Meeting the needs of our students and the larger community
  • Reliance on the wisdom of our campus community

Academic program changes:

  • UMD’s current programs include:
    • 92 Baccalaureate degrees, 78 undergraduate minors, and eight undergraduate credit certificates, plus
    • 22 Master’s degrees, nine graduate minors, and six post-baccalaureate credit certificates.
  • Of these programs, four Baccalaureate degrees, 12 undergraduate minors, and one undergraduate certificate are suspending new enrollment this year and will be proposed for discontinuation starting fall 2026.
    • Less than 1% of current UMD undergraduate students are enrolled in the four suspended Baccalaureate programs.
    • All students currently enrolled in suspended programs will be able to complete their programs at UMD through teach-out plans.

Creating a vibrant academic profile:

  • Modest changes to the program array allows UMD to focus resources on teaching, research, and service across our four signature strengths of cultural and global engagement, environmental sustainability, community and economic vitality, and health and well-being.
  • Regular review of academic program offerings promotes curricular efficiency and alignment with a diverse array of student interests, employment projections, and our mission.
  • Routinely reviewing our academic programs provides additional opportunities for partnerships with other higher education institutions and the development of new and innovative programs.
  • UMD’s academic programs will continue to meet the needs of growing student enrollments, align with workforce needs, and powerfully use our available resources.
  • Our identity as a research university, community-engaged university, and opportunity university points to our unique and transformative educational experiences and community impacts.
  • UMD continues to excel in many ways and remains a strong institution now and into the future.
