B. Protocols

GENERAL

Internships: 0.13 CH/student
Concurrent Courses: count only once

Team Taught Courses: CH are split between the instructors proportionate to their share of the course.

Graduate Thesis Courses (SFA Plan B papers): Number of credits divided by 4 for each student registered.

Independent Study: 0.2 CH/SCH (maximum of 4 CH per faculty member per semester). SFA Practice: department routinely allows up to 5 students to enroll to study with each faculty member authorized to accept Independent Study students.

ART & DESIGN SPECIFIC

Studio (lecture/lab format) Courses:
3 cr = 230 min/week =  4.6 CH

4 cr = 303 min/week = 6 CH
Art 4899 1 cr = 3 CH

Seminars
Art 8903 Art teaching practicum = 60 min/week = 1.2 CH

MUSIC DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC

50 minutes of class per week = 1 Contact Hour (CH)

Applied lessons

3 hours (180 minutes) of applied lesson teaching = 2 Contact Hours

Applied Study (1.5 clock hours = 1 CH)
1 cr = 30 min/week = 0.3 CH
3 cr = 60 min/week = 0.7 CH
piano: 2 cr = 45 min/week = 0.5 CH

Master Class/Group Lessons:
This is essentially a shared class. 1 CH divided by the number of faculty members responsible for the class.

Direction and Rehearsal of Large Ensembles:
(Bands, Orchestras, Choirs)
1 clock hour (60 minutes) = 1 CH to a maximum of 4 CH per ensemble per semester.

Rehearsal of Chamber Music Ensembles and Combos:
1 CH maximum per chamber ensemble or combo per semester.

Student Teacher Supervision:
0.45 CH for each student teacher supervised.

THEATRE DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC

Performance Courses: (Lecture-demonstration/lab)
50 minutes instruction = 1 CH
55 minutes instruction = 1.1 CH (Dance studio)
60 minutes instruction = 1.2 CH (Acting studio)

Design Courses:
50 minutes instruction = 1 CH
4 cr = 220 min/week = 4.4 CH

Practica:
1 cr = 150 min/week = 3 CH
2 cr = 300 min/week = 6 CH

Shared Course
For courses in which the instructors are both or all present during instruction, total CH shall not exceed the course credits by more than 50%.

STUDENT TEACHING SPECIFIC

Supervision of one student teacher is assigned .67 CH to accommodate the time required to implement clinical supervision. For a student teacher placed more than 40 miles from UMD (or the Twin Cities), 1.00 CH will be assigned to accommodate travel time. For supervision of a
student teacher who has failed student teaching once and is attempting a second student teaching experience, .67 CH is assigned to accommodate the additional time and assistance which the supervisor must provide. For students who must repeat student teaching, the following applies:

0.67 CH if the student is placed within 40 miles of UMD or the Twin Cities;
1.11 CH if the student is placed beyond 40 miles from UMD or the Twin Cities.

Appropriate proration of CH for less than six visits per student shall be used.
