Lecture: a fifty-minute class period shall constitute one Contact Hour (CH).
Team Teaching: In instances where two instructors are assigned to one class; e.g., PEP 3970 Supervised Teaching: College, 1 cr, the Contact Hours associated with the class are split equally between the two instructors.
Independent Study is eligible for Contact Hour assignment using the following formula: 0.2 per student credit hour (SCH) up to 4 CH per semester.
UROP projects will count as 0.34 CH per project. Independent Study and UROP projects can be used to raise CH to full load but cannot be used to warrant overload pay.
Internships and Externships (Undergraduate): Shall use the formula 0.13 x # of students enrolled, not to exceed 4 CH per semester. Exceptions are noted in department specific protocols.
Shared Teaching: where two or more instructors are in the room at the same time shall have up to 150% CH. Courses taught in this fashion need to receive prior permission from the Dean.

For supervision of a student teacher who has failed student teaching once and is attempting a second student teaching experience, 1.34 CH is assigned to accommodate the additional time and assistance which the supervisor must provide. For students who must repeat student teaching, the following applies:
1.34 CH if the student is placed within 40 miles of UMD or the Twin Cities;
2.0 CH if the student is placed beyond 40 miles from UMD or the Twin Cities.
